How we plan to teach 5,000 rural kids to code

Kids in rural India today, global citizens of tomorrow

Our Mission

Choose 5,000 rural kids

5000 kids, as the name implies, is about developing a pathway for teaching and empowering a large number of kids.

Teach them technology

We help rural Indian students learn software programming and earn global technology certifications. Our program supports them for 3-5 years while they continue to pursue their formal education. The students only need to dedicate 10-12 hours per week to the program.

From rural kids to global citizens

The program focuses on learning that is effective in teaching practical skills in technology. This bridges the divide between academic learning and actual industry needs, making them highly employable. Rural kids can now access and prosper in the global knowledge-based economy.

This philanthropic program is entirely free for the kids

Here is the 5000 Kids program

Enroll kids from rural schools, colleges

We are currently enrolling two distinct groups of kids. Both groups have some benefits compared to the other.

The outcomes of each group will be evaluated at regular intervals during the life of the program. The overall outcomes will become apparent in the next couple of years.

Colleges

The first group consists of kids who have just started their first year of college and will graduate in the next 3 to 4 years.

Active enrollment

Schools

The second group aims to identify kids who are slightly earlier in their education cycle, meaning kids who are currently in the ninth or tenth grade, and work with them.

Active enrollment

Select kids with basic skills

Anyone can enroll in our program regardless of their education level. Whether they are in the 9th grade in school, or in college studying commerce or arts, they are welcome to join us.

Basic English and analytical skills are the only requirements for kids to join.

English comprehension

First, they must be able to read, write and understand English. They should be able to understand any English movie by watching it.

Analytical skills

Two, they must show their analytical abilities by taking a small quiz that we have created to measure their potential for software programming.

Sponsor each individual kid for a complete toolkit

The program is build to be done along with the kids’ regular school or college workloads. hence, the program aims to empower each kid with a complete toolset and let them learn at their own pace.

Courses that focus on practical skills in technology

Course material

The computer science course content is sourced from some of the top open universities in the world, such as Harvard University and Stanford Open University. These courses are presented in some of the best self-paced formats, covering various levels of computer science from basic to advanced.

The courses are chosen for their effectiveness in teaching practical skills in technology, and narrows the gap between education curriculum in universities and actual industry needs. This is highly desirable for prospective employers.

Certifications

These universities provide globally acclaimed credentials when the course is completed. We begin with the CS50 program from Harvard University, which is one of the best introductory courses in computer science and also the most popular. This program gives a completion certificate from Harvard University, which will be a great addition to the kids’ resume.

Depending on the individual kid’s technology preference, they can complete advanced courses from Harvard University such as CS 50 Java, CS 50 Web technologies, or CS 50 Python.

This is a lifelong learning path with abundant resources and certifications such as the CS50, CS51. Each level of certification helps the kids master a specific technology framework, and thus makes them highly desirable for the employer who needs that technology.

Support self-learning with guidance from dedicated teachers

While these courses are built for self learning, we agument the learning by providing full time teachers who log-in to virtual classrooms during school off-hours, and on the weekends. These teachers are available as a resource for the kids to tap into on-demand.

They assist the kids in broad level course navigation and deeper technology concepts.

These teachers are responsible for a certain batch of students and keep a track of the progress of their batch over the years. The teachers are responsible to ensure that the students continue to actively participate during the full course of this program.

Successful outcomes include employment, college sponserships

1

For our first group of college students, we have them under this program for three or four years, depending on whether they are enrolled in a three-year or a four-year degree programme.

During this time, we will help them develop the foundations of software programming and guide them to specialize in a specific technology domains of their interest.

By acquiring globally recognized certifications, they will become highly employable in the technology sector by the time they complete their degree courses.

2

For the second group of students who are enrolled from the 9th or 10th grade of school, we have them enrolled in our program for 5-7 years.

During their school years, we start preparing them on the foundations of software programming.
Those who pass the certifications can get scholarships for computer science degrees across India.

We continue to mentor them while they pursue their computer science degree, enabling them to do advanced level certifications, making them highly desirable to prospective employers.
